Where do the clothes you donate go?

When you donate clothes, they typically go through several stages to ensure they are used effectively. Here’s what generally happens:

  1. Sorting and Assessment: Once clothes are collected at charity shops, donation centers, or clothing banks, they are sorted by volunteers or staff. Clothes in good condition are set aside for resale or direct distribution, while worn or damaged items are often earmarked for recycling.

  2. Resale in Charity Shops: Clothes in good condition are cleaned, if necessary, priced, and sold in charity shops across Oxfordshire, such as those run by Sobell House Hospice, British Heart Foundation, Oxfam, or Cancer Research UK. The proceeds from these sales fund the charity’s specific mission, whether it’s providing hospice care, supporting medical research, or aiding global poverty relief.

  3. Direct Distribution: Some clothes are distributed directly to individuals in need through local shelters, community centers, or charitable initiatives. This is especially important for helping the homeless, low-income families, or refugees, who may receive essential clothing items like coats, warm layers, or everyday essentials.

  4. Recycling: Clothes that aren’t suitable for resale or direct use are sent to textile recycling facilities. These items are repurposed into new materials, such as insulation, industrial rags, or new fabrics, which supports sustainability and reduces waste.

  5. Export to Developing Countries: Some surplus or unsellable clothes are sold in bulk to textile merchants who export them to developing countries. In these regions, the clothes are sold in local markets, providing affordable clothing options to communities in need.

  6. Upcycling: Certain items may be creatively upcycled into new products, such as bags, accessories, or home goods, either by the charity itself or through partnerships with sustainable fashion initiatives. This process adds value to items that might otherwise be discarded.

By donating clothes in Oxfordshire, you contribute to a cycle that supports charitable work, provides aid to those in need, and promotes environmental sustainability.

In or around Oxfordshire and want to donate some old or unwanted clothing that you no longer use anymore? You’ve come to the right place. Browse through the locations below or use the map to find the closest one to you.

Almost all of the clothes banks will accept common items such as shoes, socks, pants, jackets, dresses, and more. However, if you have something a little different you want to donate like appliances, furniture, toys, books, or other homewares, give them a call beforehand to see if they can accept your donation.

Despite some charities shutting down their clothing bins around the county, claiming private companies and local councils are now reaping the profit, there are still plenty of great organisations for you to donate to. The Fire Fighters Charity, The Air Ambulance Service, and The Salvation Army all have years of experience in handling second-hand clothing.

Just make sure that what you’re donating can actually be re-used. Also, if the clothing bin you arrive at is full, don’t dump it on the outside – give the charity a call to let them know, and find another bin to drop off your clothes at.
