How are your donated clothes distributed?

In Hampshire, donated clothes are distributed through several channels, ensuring they reach those in need or are used to support charitable causes. Here’s how the process generally works:

  1. Sorting and Assessment:

    • Once collected, donated clothes are sorted by staff or volunteers at charity shops, donation centers, or local shelters. They assess the condition and type of clothing to determine the best way to distribute or use them.

  2. Resale in Charity Shops:

    • Good Condition Clothes: Clothes in good condition are cleaned, if necessary, and then priced for sale in charity shops across Hampshire. Shops like those run by Oxfam, British Heart Foundation, Cancer Research UK, and Naomi House & Jacksplace rely on these sales to fund their work, whether it’s supporting medical research, hospice care, or global aid projects.

  3. Direct Distribution:

    • To People in Need: Some clothes, particularly essential items like warm clothing, are distributed directly to people in need through local shelters, community centers, or charitable initiatives. For example, organizations like The Salvation Army and local homeless shelters may give clothes directly to homeless individuals or low-income families.

  4. Recycling:

    • Unsellable Clothes: Items that are not suitable for resale or direct distribution are often sent to textile recycling facilities. These clothes are repurposed into new materials, such as insulation, industrial rags, or even new fabrics, promoting sustainability and reducing waste.

  5. Export to Developing Countries:

    • Bulk Distribution: Surplus clothes or those that can’t be sold locally might be sold in bulk to textile merchants, who export them to developing countries. These clothes are then sold in local markets, providing affordable clothing options to communities in need abroad.

  6. Upcycling:

    • Creative Reuse: Some donated clothes may be upcycled into new products, such as bags or accessories, either by the charity itself or through partnerships with sustainable fashion projects.

This multi-faceted approach ensures that your donated clothes in Hampshire are effectively used, whether by helping those in need locally, supporting charitable causes through resale, or contributing to environmental sustainability through recycling and upcycling efforts.

List of Hampshire Clothes Bank Locations

The coast county of Hampshire has plenty of clothing banks scattered around the region, meaning you’re sure to find one near you in no time. Scroll through the list below or visit the map to get started. You’ll find most of the clothes banks in Southampton, Portsmouth, Basingstoke, Gosport, and more.

Commonly accepted items at the clothing recycling centres include pants, jackets, dresses, shoes, socks, and more. If you want to donate something a little bit different like furniture, homewares, appliances, or linen, please call them beforehand to check if they can accept your donation.

In recent times, more and more organisations are starting to accept clothing donations to help those in need. But you’ll always be able to donate to the classics such as The Salvation Army and the Fire Fighters Charity – both of which’ve been accepting clothing donations for many years.

Keep in mind as well, that if your clothes are too old or unusable, it’s unlikely the charity will be able to accept them. Also, if the donation bin you arrive at is already full, leave them outside the bin – it creates a big nuisance for the charity and council as well.

If you know any clothes banks near you in Hampshire that aren’t listed below, please let us know and we’ll add them to the list.
